BAIC To Host Straw Hat Production

For the first time since conducting training courses and seminars the Special Events and Handicraft Development Department of the Bahamas Agricultural and Industrial Corporation will be hosting a workshop on Straw Hat Production via Zoom on November 17-18, 2020.

The workshop sessions which will be held from 11am-1pm each day will be facilitated by Mrs. Eldena Miller-Cartwright, owner of Exclusive Bahamian Craft. So far quite a number of artisans are showing an interest in participating in this workshop.Due to the COIVIS-19 pandemic, BAIC is looking at new methods to train and empower as many young Bahamian entrepreneurs as possible.

Once this workshop comes to a successful completion, plans will be made to incorporate future events via Zoom. Many Bahamians have participated in straw craft workshops held by BAIC over the years but this new skill of hat-making is expected to assist artisans in creating straw hats in addition to different varieties and styles of handbags.

BAIC is extending an invitation to all those persons interested in learning new skills with straw. Each participant is expected to provide their own material. A list of material will be provided once payment is received. Participants must be able to operate a sewing machine. Additionally, the pass code and ID number to access Zoom will be provided via email. Payment for the workshop is by cash only, which can be made at BAIC headquarters on Old Trail Road and at sub-offices in Abaco, Andros, Eleuthera, Exuma and Grand Bahama.
